Painting with shaving cream is an amazing sensory play idea for indoors or out! Use it in the bath or take it outside to paint on the patio door like we did!

We love playing with shaving cream! I always have a couple of cheap cans of Barbasol shaving foam set aside for play activities. We frequently use it to create art and for sensory play.

If you only have one or two little ones, this shaving cream paint is a fabulous bath-time activity.

I play with a sightly larger crowd though so we use our sliding glass doors as a large “canvas” for everyone to gather around.

Making your shaving cream paint:

They LOVED this activity! Even my twelve year old, who was home this morning because he was heading out to a hockey tournament, got in on the action.

Honestly, they had a blast. They were at it for about an hour, and when 3 of them finally finished up and moved on, one of the youngest ones stayed at it for a good 15 or 20 minutes more.

Who knew something this simple would keep them entertained for this long? It was a wonderful way to spend the morning creating art in the great, wide open.

And when they were done, I filled up a bucket with warm water and handed out sponges, and we had a whole new activity on our hands (not to mention squeaky-clean sliding glass doors). 😉

I use it on my tables at school when they get really dirty. Takes a while to get it all off, but I have clean tables and the kiddos love it. WE use it for namewriting practice while we are at it.

I’m so glad this brought back good memories for you, Leroy. I’m all about providing kids with the kind of good, old-fashioned play experiences we had “back in the day”. 🙂

When my kids were little we did this, but we would have one child stand on the inside (or clean side) and pose against the window. The kids on the paint side would then paint the model. We would dress them as funny clowns or pirates along with any other character ideas they could come up with. It was always entertaining and every child loved getting involved. I’m so glad to see that kids are still doing this activity. It was always one of my favorites

Does the shaving cream not burn their eyes if they rub them?

    Reply

    • happyhooligans

Yes, I imagine it would. You’d want to do this with age-appropriate children, and let them know not to touch their eyes while playing.

Won’t using food colors stain? Whenever I use food coloring for frosting, egg coloring, etc, I found that it stained.

Hi Chris! Your question is a good one. At full strength, right out of the bottle, food colouring will temporarily stain your fingers. The great thing is that shaving cream is an easy way to get the stain off, so when we mix food colouring with shaving cream for play, there really isn’t any staining. If there’s any slight discolouration, a scrub with some fresh shaving cream, when you’re finished playing, should remove it. 🙂
