Rogue" cells determined by human geneticists as the cells with many chromosome aberrations. The main enigma of this phenomenon is its levels are unexpected higher in many studies. Frequently, these cells emergence in human are linked with radiation or viruses. "Rogue" cells supposed to be very important in mutagenesis, oncogenesis and even in evolution process. We use plant assay (Allium cepa L.) to analyze the induction of cells with many chromosome aberration of different types. Cytogenetic damage of gamma-irradiation as frequency of multiaberrant cells in the root tip cells of Allium was determined. The empiric numbers of cells with many aberrations were compared with those expected in theoretical distributions (Poisson, geometric and Pascal). The frequency of multiaberrant cells in root tip cells was increased up to 83,33 ± 10,76 % under gamma- irradiation in various doses. Gamma-irradiation induced more multiaberrant cells in A. cepa meristems than expected in th...

Plants are the main supportive human being system. Under insistently exposure to mutagens, such as low ionizing doses radiation, enhance level UV-B radiation, chemicals, heat, drought, and cold, they are enforces either to adapt either to die. Ordinarily is accepted that the living organisms under the influence of environmental stress factors, always acquire adaptive responses, but the available data still stay controversial. The effects of chronic exposure on living organisms and populations still stay insufficiently explored, and denote a much needed field of research. The aim of a review is to summarize published data for consequences of chronic ionizing radiation on plant growth and development. Epigenetic and genetic alterations were registered in plants arising under combined influence of different environmental stress conditions. Nevertheless, there are still not enough information for the combined effects of ionizing radiation, enhance level UV-B radiation, which are already registered as results from climatic changes and so expected to have important role in the future on plants populations. The increased pollution of the environment is out of the doubt, but the knowledge about mechanisms and the range of plants to adapt is still insufficient.
X-Ray and Gamma Irradiation Induced Chromosomal Aberrations in Plant Species as the Consequence of Induced Mutagenesis – an Overview

X rays and gamma irradiations create genetic variations by widening the gene pool, and induce gene mutation for generating commercially important products through enhancement of superior qualitative trait(s). Gene mutation is of global significance and successful mutagenesis experiment depends on the sensitivity of the genotype (s) to the administered doses of the mutagen (s). Assessment of LD50, lethality, injury, mitotic and meiotic aberration frequency (key components to determine sensitivity of a species) is prerequisite for determining sub-lethal doses and to monitor successful mutation breeding experiments. Mutagens (ionizing radiations: X rays and gamma rays) inducing chromosomal aberrations can be ascertained from mitotic cells following root tip squash preparation (clumping and stickiness, fragments, rings, polyploid cells, pseudochiasma, bridges with or without fragments, paired fragments, micronuclei, giant cell, chromatin disorganization, among others) as well as from me...

To study some mitotic and meiotic parameters and irregularities of gamma ray irradiated (with two doses 4 and 8K r.) parents (M0), plants (M1) and their control of four onion cultivars (Giza 6, Giza 20 Shandawel 1 and Beheiri red), acetocarmin-squashed preparations were made and chromosome behavior of the PMCs (pollen mother cells) were also examined. The almost all investigated mitotic and meiotic cells in the present material showed a diploid number of 2n=16 chromosomes and the absence of cells with ploidy formula. The mitotic index of M0 control plants of Beheiri variety (23.15) was the highest than those of the other three varieties. In M0 irradiated plants of Giza 6 and Giza 20 varieties, the values of mitotic index were insignificantly different from that of the control plants. In contrast, the mitotic indexes in M0 irradiated plants of shandaweel 1 was considerably high than that of the control. The mitotic indexes of M1 plants (with 4Kr dose) were lower than those of 8 Kr in both Giza 6 and shandaweel 1 varieties. The M0 irradiated plants of Beheiri variety couldn't survive to the next M1 generation. Hence their mitotic indexes of M1 plants and subsequently their M1 control plants were not found. In general, the MI values of the M1 irradiated plants (particularly with 8Kr), were high than those of the control. The mitotic irregularity percentages of M0 irradiated plants were considerably high than those of M1 plants. The structural aberration (breaks, fragments, stickiness and Bridges) and micronuclei were the commonly observed aberrations in the mitotic cells. The M0 irradiated plants have a higher chiasma frequency than those of control in all varieties and treatments. In general the highest frequency of chiasma was recorded in irradiated plants (12Kr) of Beherie and Shandaweel 1 varieties. The appearance of univalent and multivalent was higher in irradiated plants than those of control. In the same manner, the highest percentage of irregular synapses (Uni-and multivalent) were higher in M0 irradiated plants than those of control. The Mo irradiated plants with 12 kr in Giza 6 variety exhibited the highest percentage of the structural aberrations. The control plants of all varieties showed the lowest values of structural aberrations in comparison with those of irradiated plants.

Mutagenic effectiveness of gamma rays on Allium cepa was studied. The seeds were treated with five doses (viz. 5kR, 10kR, 15 kR, 20kR and 25kR) of gamma rays. Chromosomal abnormalities were observed. Chromosomal aberrations like, dicentric, tricentric, ring, minute, deletion, fragment, laggard, bridge and micronuclei were noticed in treated root tip mitosis. The chromosomal abnormalities were increased with increasing doses. The chromosomal abnormalities were dependent on the radiation doses.
